2013 Quarterback Draft Class: No Consensus Top 10 QB talent, but run on QBs still likely

On the 30th Anniversary of the 1983 NFL Draft Class that included John Elway and Dan Marino, the 2013 QB Draft Class lacks a surefire star.  Not only that, opinions vary widely in Mock Drafts from 2 QBs taken in the top 10 to no QBs taken in the 1st round (Greg Cote - Miami Herald has no QBs taken in the first round of his mock draft).

The Ultimate Mock Draft for 2013 has 4 QBs in Round 1.  We believe each QB has his flaws and probably shouldn’t be ranked in the to 10 or 15, but that won't stop a run of QBs in Round 1.  Geno Smith didn’t wow in his last Bowl Game. Ryan Nassib can be inaccurate with his throws, EJ Manuel had a good Senior Bowl but is still an unknown quantity, and Matt Barkley is coming off a shoulder injury with the USC brand tarnished by the performance of its alumni.

Despite flaws in the 2013 QB Draft class, teams are desperate for a young QB.  The Browns, Jags, Bills and Jets were terrible on offense in 2012.  Teams only go as far as their Quarterback takes them.  The Front Office can try to stick to their board and player rankings, but all it will take is Geno Smith coming off the board in the top 7 picks to start a run on QBs.

Also, 2012 proved to be a good year for rookie QBs.  Luck, RG3, Tannehill, Wilson, Foles and Cousins all had productive seasons.  Weeden was the only complete bust of blue chip QBs in 2012. GMs will be under pressure to draft the next young QB that can run a spread offense and keep fans focused on the future instead of the present.

Also consider in 2011 when Christian Ponder was projected as a late 1st round pick, and ended up going number 12 to the Vikings after Locker and Gabbert were taken a few picks ahead.  In 2013, all it will take is a team like the Browns (or the Jags or the Eagles) to take Geno Smith early and the other QBs will be likely to follow in the first round.

Say what you want about the 2013 Draft Class, but they all must have done well on their Wonderlic or we would have heard about it already.  Geno Smith, Ryan Nassib, EJ Manuel, and Matt Barkley are likely to all get drafted in Round 1 on Thursday.  Mark it down in pencil.
